10.25.21 Update
Media is Boo-tiful
Hello all,
Are things feeling a bit scary as we near the second quarter?
~ We are here to help, sign up ! (Please note, times will change for the 2nd quarter).
Here are a few thoughts and updates from our work over the past few weeks.
Network Drive message
Are you seeing this message?
WC Tech support says to restart. They also state it is due to not shutting down our laptops between school and home networks. It is recommended to shut down each afternoon, particularly if taking the laptop elsewhere. Additionally, a weekly restart in the building is recommended in order to allow up updates. Thanks to Jenny C. for capturing this screenshot for problem-solving.

Portfolio Tips:
~ Once your class has created the basic setup, (home page, about me page, grade level page with subject sub-pages) Have students publish their portfolio and then send you the link so that you can view everyone's work easily. This can be done by providing a google form for students to compete in their google classroom. You will then have a spreadsheet option with the link to each portfolio.
~ Have students check the source of any image they wish to upload from Google. Not all options are free of copyright. Creative Commons is a perfect spot to check for images. The website gives specific directions on how to credit the use of any image.

Digital resources
~ Have you tried Brain Pop? I have been going through the Brain Pop 101 course to support my understanding of what it has to offer. I have already found multiple items that will be useful in upcoming electives. As you explore this resource, please share any tips or discoveries that could be useful. If you need support navigating, please let me know.
Research
If you are engaging in research with your class, one way to encourage critical thinking is to have them evaluate the resource they are using for information. Setting them up for success with resource options that do not involve a web search is a good place to start. Remind them that although Google is convenient, we have to be discerning with the choices presented.
Consider these options when possible:
Discovery Education
NC Wise Owl
Destiny Discover Collections ~ ask us to create one for an upcoming topic or check out the ones already created by Elizabeth.
Books ~ reserve ahead with Destiny, or provide us with a topic for your upcoming projects
Brain Pop
and coming soon ~ Pebble Go
And when resorting to Google, guide students to seek out factual, unbiased information. These resources on Common Sense media are helpful for you and our older students to explore.
Brain Pop and Brain Pop Jr. also have some resources for all.
Family Pet Pics still needed
Leo is still a bit lonely. Please share a photo of you/ your family with your pets for our friends and family wall! Feel free to email one.
Thanks for reading!
