 Reboot ALL devices on Fridays

From Chris Shearer, Senior Administrator for Digital Resources:

We currently have about 20,000 Chromebooks not running the latest version.  Regular rebooting would help cut down on that. Since we went to ‘close lid to lock’ for devices for COVID, devices do not always get rebooted.  Chrome OS will download updates but takes a reboot to apply those updates.  The best practice for staff and students is a regular weekly reboot.  Underwood will work toward this on Fridays.  Videos for student and staff info will be created this week.

KnowBe4 Phishing Training and Adobe

From Allison Reid Senior Director, Digital Learning & Libraries:

Please complete the KnowBe4 Phishing Training. It is found in the WakeID portal. With an uptick in cybersecurity events, training is our best defense to keep our systems and data safe.

All staff now have access to Adobe Creative Cloud. The link here will give you more info, including a link to instructions to how to install it. My recommendation to you and your staff is to only download the specific tools you need. We are super excited to provide these tools to you!

Chrome Vox

Chromebooks have a built-in screen reader that can be super helpful and allow those with visual impairments to use the Chrome operating system. Chrome Vox extension has been accidentally turned on recently by several students.  The accessibility features are found in the bottom right corner of the Chromebook and easily be clicked on and off by students.  If you see a highlighted box or hear the Chromebook reading after each click you can turn ChromeVox on or off from any page by pressing Ctrl + Alt + z. 

Studnet Use of Devices

I am continuing to connect with classrooms that have missing device agreement forms.  It is important that we remain diligent in monitoring devices and remind our students of safe and responsible use.  In January, we will be reminding students and families about these agreements and you should plan on revisiting the beginning of the year internet safety lessons and Chromebook care as a class. 

Brain Pop

I have been working to learn more about the resources in Brain Pop to be able to help you engage your student with this platform.  Let me know if you would like additional support in the classroom with research and using the features in Brain Pop.
